With gas prices through the roof you can expect to see more and more supercars being released as hybrids or being available in electric versions as well. The Porsche 918 Spyder falls directly into that category. Designed by Michael Mauer the Porsche 918 Spyder is a mid-engined sports plug-in hybrid. Porsche plans to make 918 models by 2014 and you can cop one for US$845,000.

Being the successor the Carrera GT is no easy feat but the 918 Spyder ensures that the Porsche supercar legacy in fine form. A 918 that was fitted with the ‘Weissach Package’ (an additional US$84,000) currently has the Nürburgring lap time record of 6:57 on the 12.8 mile road course. This is 14 seconds faster than the previous record thus making the Porsche 918 Spyder the first series production street-legal car to break the 7 minute barrier.
