The Porsche 918 Spyder falls directly into that category. Designed by Michael Mauer the Porsche 918 Spyder is a mid-engined sports plug-in hybrid. Porsche plans to make 918 models by 2014 and you can cop one for US$845,000.

Being the successor the Carrera GT is no easy feat but the 918 Spyder ensures that the Porsche supercar legacy in fine form. A 918 that was fitted with the ‘Weissach Package’ (an additional US$84,000) currently has the Nürburgring lap time record of 6:57 on the 12.8 mile road course. This is 14 seconds faster than the previous record thus making the Porsche 918 Spyder the first series production street-legal car to break the 7 minute barrier.
